Billie Dixon graduated from Watford City High School in 1980. She was a star in basketball from 1974-1979, lettering five years with a career total of 1,714 points. She also starred in track and field in 1975-1980, lettering five years. Billie took her track experience to Grand Forks and became a coach. In 1986,1987,1988,1990, and 1994, her teams achieved first place in the EDC Outdoor meets and in 1989 and 1991, she coached her teams to first place at both the EDC Outdoor and Indoor meets.
Billie believes that she was blessed with student athletes that had a strong work ethic and that always strived for their personal best - which is what she claimed sets GFC apart from other schools. One thing Billie remembers best about GFC is that at her first track practice she was shocked that only 6 athletes showed up.
She quickly figured out that she needed to encourage middle school athletes at their meets to come out for track. Billie also surrounded herself with excellent assistant coaches, stating, “It takes everyone working together to make great teams.” As the program grew, she was able to take many teams to state and ended up placing in the top 5 in consecutive years, 1986-1992 and then again in 1994. In 1986 and 1987, they were crowned State Champions.
Billie presently resides in Grand Forks working as a substitute teacher and is encouraged by very supportive parents.
