Al was a multisport athlete at GFC in the early 1930’s. Al was a two-time letter winner in the sport of boys golf as a freshman and sophomore. Due to the depression, there was no boys golf in the 1933 & 1934 seasons. In his sophomore season in 1932, he was a member of the team that won the State Boys Golf Tournament while setting a state record at that time. In the summer of 1934, he won the Grand Forks City Golf Championship. Al was also a four-time letter winner in boys basketball. He was voted All-State in his senior year and was captain of the boys basketball team.
While in high school, Al was also: class president as a freshman and sophomore, voted most representative boy and most athletic boy his senior year and served as assistant editor of the Forx yearbook. After high school, Al attended UND where he was also a member of the mens golf team. In 1936, he was the North Dakota Golf Association champion. Upon graduation, Al began a career as an FBI agent and later went on to be an accountant.
