Matt Bonzer was a two-sport athlete at GFC form 1999-2003.  He participated on excellent cross country teams at GFC and achieved excellence as one of the best swimmers in GFC history.  Matt was a six-time state champion in swimming and also set three state records.  His state titles include:  three-time state champion in the 200 yard individual medley, two-time state champion in the 100 yard backstroke, and a state championship as part of the 4X100 yard freestyle relay.  He set state records twice in the 200 yard individual medley relay and once in the 100 yard backstroke.

Matt notes that “The tradition and history of success, both athletically and academically at GFC, is what sets our school apart from other schools that I competed against.  Being surrounded by brilliant minds, hard workers, and inspirational personalities day in and day out was a major key to the successes I had in the pool and in the classroom.”

Matt further adds, “More than any individual championship swim that I had, what I remember the most were the successes I experienced as part of a team.  Playing second chair trombone in the symphonic and Knight jazz bands that both won the Breckenridge Music Festival, being part of a cross country team that competed for a team championship at state, and being part of a state championship relay team in swimming are all things that I reflect on more than my individual swimming career.”

Matt has been living in Grand Forks permanently since 2012.  He, along with his family, own Bonzer’s Sandwich Pub in downtown Grand Forks.
